How I got started:

I have been an Artist and Teacher ever since graduating from Brooklyn College in the 1960s.

Several years ago I has an adult Bat Mitzvah. One extremely important part of the service is to wear a special prayer shawl called a tallis. I wanted a prayer shawl that would have great meaning for me. I wanted my decesased parents included in one of the great milestones of my life.

I had always admired the deceptively fragile look of silk. Its delicate simmering beauty was just like the Jewish people to me. There was great endurance and inner strength yet a look of subtle warmth and vibrant color.

I taught myself silk-painting after fruitlessly looking for a course I could take. The silk painting came so easily, I felt sure I had done it in another life. The colors were magnificent and I soon had a tallis with the mountains of our family summer home in New Hampshire - blazed with the orange, pink, red and purple of the sunrise in my backyard. The clouds in their movement and shape took on my parents' faces. Watching me at my moment of happiness and hugging me with their presence.

I taught art all my life while pursuing my own artwork in painting, drawing, stained glass, silver jewelry, ceramics and finally in this new field of painted silk.

Since 1997 I have been perfecting the many tecniques that go into each piece of artwork.

Today:

Every piece is hand-painted by Rhoda Sakowitz. When you purchase the Wearable Art that you see here - you are literally getting a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork that you can wear, wash and enjoy. Items for sale include scarves, prayer shawls, chuppahs, jackets and ensembele outfits.
